So yesterday I took my daughter and two of her friends to the mall for lunch and to shop for a birthday gift for a friend of theirs and to the cinema to see "The Lake House" (which was a cute little film, if you don't take it too seriously). One of the friends is a school mate; the other is a former school mate and church youth friend.

The girls were laughing because they bought Legos for the birthday gift, for a boy who is turning 14. They were just amused by the thought of a 14-year-old boy still liking to play with Legos.

I laughed. I know men in their 30s who could receive similar toys for their birthdays and would love it to death.

We had a discussion in the car after the movie, ranging from time paradoxes to Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett and into general geekiness. The school mate said something about being a geek and being damn proud of it. I laughed and said that the older you get, the less of a "problem" it is to be a little nerdy.
Pure Nerd
86 % Nerd, 43% Geek, 39% Dork
For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.
You scored better than half in Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd.

The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendences associated with the "dork." No-longer. Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful.

Congratulations!

Every time Craig and I go to Toy's R Us (which is far too often in my opinion) the first stop is the lego aisle.

Every ime I call my husband a computer "geek", James (my budding pedant) has to chime in with "but he doesn't bit the heads off of live chickens or anything". That comment usually gets a double take.

I bought my dad legos for Christmas a few years ago, and he LOVES them!!! To this day, when he gets bored or something, he builds something in legos, and make us all look at it.

Toys are ALWAYS an approprite gift for men. Of any age.

Mum, you just had to tell that story. I bet brooky-boy will be just as pleased, if he finds out. He also knows the story. We told him and then laughed at him.

Hey, all mothers have to embarrass their kids some time. Just be glad I'm not the type to bring out the baby-bathtime pics. *grin*

No, because I'm not quite that evil. Anyway, you like the ones of your first bath, right after you were born.
