1592 - Titus Andronicus first staged at the Rose Theatre. Yay for Shakespeare!
1773 - The first public Colonial American museum opens in Charleston, South Carolina. And yay for Charleston!
1866 - Royal Aeronautical Society is formed in London.
1915 - United States House of Representatives rejects proposal to give women the right to vote. BOO! BOO! Sexist bastards.
1932 - Hattie W. Caraway becomes the first woman elected to the United States Senate. Yay!
1964 - Rebels in Zanzibar begin a revolt and later proclaim a republic.
1966 - Batman the TV series debuts on ABC.Da na na na na na na na na
1969 - Hard rock band Led Zeppelin release their eponymous first album. Must get the Led out
1986 - Space shuttle Columbia takes-off with the first Hispanic-American astronaut, Dr. Franklin R. Chang-Diaz.This is the first thing on the list that I actually remember.
1991 - Persian Gulf War: An act of the U.S. Congress authorizes the use of military force to drive Iraq out of Kuwait.I wrote a poem about this, when it happened. I was all of 15.
1998 - Nineteen European nations agree to forbid human cloning.
2006 - Turkey released Mehmet Ali Ağca from prision after serving 25 years for shooting Pope John Paul II. Guess it doesn't matter any more, since His Holiness is dead now anyway?
2006 - 362 people are crushed near Mecca in Saudi Arabia during a Muslim ritual. Ow.

FICTION:
In 2001: A Space Odyssey, the fictional computer HAL becomes operational on January 12. In the movie by Stanley Kubrick, HAL was "born" in 1992, while in the book by Arthur C. Clarke the same event occurs in 1997.

1775 - American Revolutionary War: The Battle of Lexington and Concord – British General Thomas Gage attempts to confiscate American colonists' firearms. Captain John Parker orders his band of minutemen to not fire unless fired upon. Random shots rang out among the British soldiers. The minutemen promptly fired back. This was the "shot heard round the world." The British are driven back to Boston, Massachusetts, thus beginning the American Revolutionary War.


1904 - Much of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is destroyed by fire.

1927 - Mae West is sentenced to 10 days in jail for obscenity for her play Sex.

1943 - World War II: In Poland, German troops enter the Warsaw ghetto to round up the remaining Jews, beginning the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

You share a birthday with Tim Curry!! I so love that guy(if i have the right guy) He played in Clue i think. Well if it is the same guy. I love, love, love him. Oh ya in case you are wondering i'm azdesertrose's daughter, formaly knowen as Mini-Me. and i was raised on Clue so i really love the ppl in it. Tim Curry, espeically b/c he's so funny.
