I helped my friend Tiff midwife her cat, Nut, this evening. Nut, a brown tabby with a few ginger tabby patches, went into labor around 10 this evening. She's young for it, not yet a year old, but she did a good job, except for not quite knowing what to do about umbilical cords and afterbirths.
Here she is, cleaning up the firstborn kitten, who looks just like her.

And here is the first kitten as Tiff and I are about to double-team it to trim the umbilical cord.

It's kind of hard to see, but the second kitten, who so far appears to be solid white, is being born.

A few minutes later, she popped out a third kitten, a ginger tabby like his dad.

Here's the aforementioned dad, Punkin, who seemed to think he needed to supervise and assist.

And here we are about to trim kitten 3's umbilical cord.

I got several shots of the three kittens nursing. It took them a while to find the milk bar.

And to be honest, we thought she was done. The kittens were clean and nursing and Nut seemed pretty relaxed.

So we got up and went to the computer to get the pics off my camera. We looked back into the bedroom, and Punkin was in the box again, aggravating Nut, so Tiff asked me to get his furry arse out of there.
I went and nudged him out, and then pushed a bit of towel aside to find...
A fourth kitten, another ginger tabby.

Punkin's helping clean the fourth one, as Tiff and I get ready to take care of the umbilical and afterbirth mess.

And now, she's finished.

Not what I had on the agenda for this evening, but I can't say I had anything better to do, and the new kittens are just TOO cute. I'm going to have a hard time not adopting one.

Date: 2006-03-11 01:51 pm (UTC)When I was still in the belly almost ready to get out, we had a cat that was pregnant and it gave birth on my mums lap. I think it's nice when animals trust you enough to let you in on everything and let you help them. It gives you warm fuzzies.

Date: 2006-03-11 10:12 pm (UTC)I wasn't really scared trimming the umbilicals; I was just REALLY careful not to handle the kittens too roughly. They're SO little, and I didn't want to hurt them.
Nut is a sweet cat, and she didn't seem to mind Tiff and me handling the kittens; I think she understood that we were there to help.
